1968 - 1988 - 2012? Help make 2012 a Rogue year!
January 4, 2012 | Clean Water, Protecting Rivers, Wild and Scenic Rivers
Chad Woodward
Rogue River Outreach Coordinator
In 1968 Oregon’s Rogue River became one of the eight firstrivers protected by the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act with 84 miles of protection
created.
Then in 1988 another 40 miles of the Rogue were added as Wild and Scenic. Could it be that 2012 is the year we get 93 miles of Rogue tributaries added as Wild and Scenic to protect a vital portion of this river?
If the way that 2011 ended is any indication then 2012 could be promising.
Just before the end of the year, Senators Wyden and Merkley introduced a bill that would expand permanent protection on the Rogue. In addition to protecting an additional 93 miles of clean water as Wild and Scenic the bill would add almost 60,000 acres to the adjacent Wilderness. While having a bill introduced is a good start we still need these Senators to work on getting this bill passed into law.
Oregon residents only:
Please join me in thanking the Senators for introducing this bill and in encouraging them to work on this effort until the job is done by sending a thank you. Take Action Today »

As a native Oregonian I hope that this further protection of the wonderful Rogue River comes to pass. I usually visit that area of Oregon when I come back. I have a very good friend that lives on the Rogue and other friends in the area. My family has lived in that part of Oregon in the past as well.

Hi Ray, The bill number is: S.2001; and the latest title is: Rogue Wilderness Area Expansion Act of 2011. You can find the text of the bill at: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c112:S.2001: Hope that helps, Chad

Hi Bob, I agree that the Illinois is a very special place that deserves permanent protection. Fortunately the Illinois river is protected by 50 miles of Wild & Scenic protection and runs through the 180,000 acre Kalmiopsis Wilderness. Making it the single most protected tributary of the Rogue! However, the current bill is for expanding the Rogue's permanent protections in the popular Wild & Scenic rafting segment. Perhaps a future effort will lead us to expand protections on the Illinois!

I hope the Rogue tributaries will include a good part of the Illinois River. I've hiked much of the Illinois and it is very scenic, very clean (at least it was), and quite wild.
