Several Rivers Move Closer to Permanent Protection
Yesterday was a big day for rivers as the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee approved several Wild and Scenic River bills by unanimous consent. American Rivers has been working with local communities and river groups to develop proposals and advocating on Capitol Hill for several of of these rivers, including the the Molalla River in Oregon and the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River, Pratt River, and Illabot Creek in Washington. The committee also approved a bill that would extend protect ions for the Wild and Scenic White Clay Creek in Delaware and Pennsylvania and a bill that would study the Elk River in West Virginia for Wild and Scenic eligibility.
This is a major step towards achieving permanent protections for a few of our nation’s best rivers! We’re hopeful the Senate will pass these bills in the new year so check back here for updates.
