Kayaking Promotes Better Health

PennLive.com – (November 20): James McNulty tried kayaking for the first time at the age of 54. The current president of the Canoe Club of Greater Harrisburg was at in Gifford Pinchot State Park in York County when he signed up for the club on a whim.

Soon after that maiden voyage at Gifford Pinchot State Park, he met a co-worker at the Juniata River for his first excursion. “I took three paddles and fell in love,” said McNulty, now the president of the Canoe Club of Greater Harrisburg.

In the eight years since, kayaking has become a reason to travel and means of getting in shape for McNulty.

Robert Ricketts, a Penn State University kinesiology professor said that kayaking is a great sport for men to participate in because of the upper body workout and motor skill requirements.

For men like McNulty, kayaking is an opportunity to get healthy, beyond physical conditioning.
