Great News for an Oregon Gem

It’s great news today for a little know Oregon gem – the River Styx in the Oregon Caves National Monument. Today the House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources decided to move legislation forward that would designate the River Styx as the first subterranean Wild and Scenic River. The River Styx flows underground through the cave system and significantly shapes the subterranean geologic formations and biological processes with the caves. It’s amazing how water and rivers can shape and create amazing landscapes even underground.

This bill still needs to be voted on in the House and moved forward in the Senate, but this is a big step forward, and very exciting news for tourists and visitors to this corner of Oregon if the bill finally passes. Thanks to Congressman DeFazio(4th- OR) who championed this bill in the House of Representatives, we are now one step closer to seeing a permanently protected Wild and Scenic River Styx!
