Free Courses in Pittsburgh: How to Manage a Dam Removal Project (November 9th) and Natural Flood Management (November 10th)


American Rivers is holding two free training events in Pittsburgh this November. 

On November 9th, learn how to manage a dam removal project! This course will empower you to successfully lead a dam removal project in Pennsylvania. The removal of dams and other stream barriers is a practical way to meet heightened dam safety requirements and eliminate public safety hazards, while restoring rivers, improving water quality, and enhancing fish and wildlife habitat.

Topics will include:

  • How to identify potential projects
  • Determining project complexity
  • Addressing social concerns
  • Strategies for financing projects
  • How to develop a scope of work
  • Navigating the permitting process
  • Troubleshooting
  • And more!

On November 10th, learn about natural, non-structural approaches to flood management! The goal of this course is to train flood management partners throughout Western Pennsylvania, a region known for repetitive flood damages. Learn about new techniques and options to help lessen flood risks and impacts, while also restoring and protecting rivers and floodplains.

Topics include:

  • Why traditional flood management approaches aren’t working
  • Techniques for natural flood management
  • How floodplains function
  • Watershed approaches to flood management
  • Using policy and planning to facilitate natural flood management
  • Pennsylvania’s new floodplain policies
  • And more!

Your instructors include state, regional, and national experts in the fields of dam removal and natural flood management. They’ll share their knowledge and experience, and provide real-world examples to help you succeed in your efforts. Course materials will be an excellent future reference.

Registration is limited to 50 per day.  Both courses are free-of-charge. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
