Congratulations to our friends at Felt Soul Media, Stoecker Ecological and Patagonia on the premiere of DamNation at SXSW today!

You are going to love this film. You are going to want to watch it multiple times and share it with your friends and family. You will laugh and you will cry.

In Felt Soul’s unique style, the film looks at the impact of dams on rivers and communities nationwide, and celebrates the effort to remove outdated dams to restore river health.

More than 1,150 dams have been removed on rivers across the United States, and 51 dams were removed last year.

I joined the filmmakers, Ben Knight and Travis Rummel, on the White Salmon River in 2012 when a bunch of kayakers and rafters floated through the old Condit Dam site. We joked about whether it’s possible to make a compelling film about big hulking chunks of infrastructure.

Of course the answer is a resounding yes, because this is a story about rivers – and ultimately, a story about people. The film captures the passion and heart of the individuals who are working to restore a little bit of what has been lost. This film is full of hope.
