Congratulations 2011 National River Cleanup Photo Contest Winner!

American Rivers would like to congratulate the National River Cleanup® Ohio River Sweep participants in submitting the best photo of 2011! Jeanne Ison of the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, submitted this photo of her adorable granddaughter, Christina Crouch, age 3.

Their family both organizes and participates in this cleanup every year and together Jeanne, Misti and her daughter Christina, represent three generations out on the river!

This event covers the entire Ohio River as well as many of its tributaries. Countless organizations participate in this river sweep annually including Boy and Girl Scouts clubs, church groups, government officials, civic organizations as well as private industries to name a few.

In 2011 alone, 511 cleanup sites were organized and 3,000 miles of shoreline were cleaned during the Ohio River Sweep. Christina, featured in the photo, was one of 19,000 other participants out on the river on June 18, 2011.

As winners of the National River Cleanup Photo Contest with nearly 300 votes, their photo is posted on the National River Cleanup homepage and will be used in other American Rivers publications throughout 2012.

Thank you to all of the organizers and volunteers who contributed beautiful (and trashy) photographs to the 2011 National River Cleanup Photo Contest!
