Scott Bosse

Director, Northern Rockies
Department: Conservation

Area of Focus: Scott works with local citizens, sportsmen, businesses, elected officials and conservation organizations to build support for river protection efforts in Montana, Wyoming and eastern Idaho.

Background: Scott joined American Rivers in 2009. Prior to that he spent eight years as director of aquatic conservation for the Greater Yellowstone Coalition, and four years as conservation scientist for Idaho Rivers United. His proudest achievement was passing federal legislation that permanently protected nearly 400 miles of the Snake River and its tributaries around Jackson Hole by including them in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System.

Education: M.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana (1993), B.A. in Geography and Political Science from the University of Vermont (1987)

Stepping back in time on the Loxahatchee River

Once a year my parents would take me to my favorite local haunt – the Loxahatchee River in Jonathan Dickinson State Park. There, we’d rent a canoe and head into the riverine wilderness looking for manatees, turtles and alligators.  I remember feeling like I was exploring the remotest reaches of the upper Amazon, not knowing what fascinating creatures might lie around the next bend.

It's official - You saved the Hoback!

Three months ago, we announced a tentative deal to spare western Wyoming’s Hoback River from industrial scale gas drilling – if we could raise $8.75 million to buy out a Texas energy company’s oil and gas leases by the end of the year.

Victory on the Hoback!

Over the last two years, the Hoback River in western Wyoming has climbed from #7 to #5 in our America’s Most Endangered Rivers® report due to the threat of industrial-scale gas drilling in its headwaters.

Today, the Hoback exited the list the right way – by being saved.

Groups Seal Deal to Protect Transboundary Flathead River

Last week, The Nature Conservancy of Montana and the Nature Conservancy of Canada announced they had raised the $10 million needed to buy out existing mining rights and implement new environmental protections along the North Fork of the Flathead River.  The buyout comes on the heels of legislation the British Columbian parliament passed in 2010 to protect the North Fork from all forms of mining and oil and gas drilling.
