Gary Belan

Director, Clean Water Program
Department: Conservation

Area of Focus: Gary works to promote green infrastructure in the United States, a concept that includes specific engineering and policy tools to improve the way communities manage their water resources. Gary works with a variety of groups to achieve this goal, including grassroots environmental organizations, business interests, as well as local, state and federal government agencies. He particularly loves the fact that his work allows him to empower local environmental groups, while simultaneously working on federal policy.

Background: Gary joined American Rivers in May 2003. Prior to American Rivers, he worked as a project engineer for the Clark Construction Group, working on large commercial building projects.

Education: B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Virginia, and M.A. in Environmental Policy from American University

Favorite River: Potomac River

Cutting for Clean Water

For the second year in a row, Aveda selected American Rivers as to be a recipient charity for Earth Month in the mid-Atlantic region (DE, MD, VA and Washington, DC), which also happens to be where our headquarters is located. During Earth Month, participating salons and stores host all sorts of events from silent auctions to cut-a-thons to raise awareness about clean water. We LOVE being a part of Earth Month.

Healthy Rivers mean Healthy Lakes at Great Lakes Day

Some of you may have seen some of my tweets or one of the American Rivers retweets sent during the initial meetings of this years Great Lakes day hosted by the Healing Our Waters coalition, of which we're a proud member. Members of the coalition are coming into Washington D.C. from around the Great Lakes to meet with their members of Congress to talk about a number of different issues around the Great Lakes.
