Waccamaw River Blue Trail Organizer

Department: Conservation

Area of Focus: Staci works to engage the community by reconnecting them to the Waccamaw River through the creation of its blue trail. She also provides educational outreach for landowners and local decision makers in order to further the protection efforts of critical lands along the river corridor.

Background: Staci joined American Rivers in May 2009.  Prior to that she worked for Conservation Voters of South Carolina as the Project Director for CoastMatters, focusing on local land use issues.

 Education: B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of Northern Iowa, M.S. work in Holistic Nutrition from Clayton College of Natural Health

Conway City Council Embraces Blue Trail, Possibilities with Proposed Nature Preserve

The City of Conway recently voted to move forward with plans to acquire nearly 600 acres of land in the heart of the its historic downtown. This project, two years in the making, is the result of a partnership between The Nature Conservancy, the City of Conway, Horry County, Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge, the Waccamaw Riverkeeper, Coastal Carolina University and American Rivers.

Waccamaw River Blue Trail to be extended to North Carolina

Communities across the nation are beginning to recognize the variety of benefits their local rivers offer and are taking steps to ensure their protection through the creation of Blue Trails. American Rivers and its partners have been working to create the Waccamaw River Blue Trail in South Carolina and now an effort is underway to extend the Waccamaw River Blue Trail to the North Carolina portion of the river.

Got Trees? Local Ordinance Protects Trees; Waccamaw River

Seemingly minor revisions to laws and regulations have the potential to significantly improve protections for local rivers. For example, a community in South Carolina along the Waccamaw River Blue Trail recently approved revisions to its Tree Ordinance. Small changes, such as protection for waterway trees and prohibiting clear-cutting of large tracts of land for development, will help protect nearby communities and the water they drink.

Workshop Highlights Protection Options for Landowners

Recently, over two dozen local landowners attended a discussion focusing on the variety of land protection options available for private landowners. Topics that were covered during the workshop included preserving and protecting family farms and wetlands through the programs of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the benefits of protecting your land now and in the future through conservation and estate planning as well as the local potential for purchased easements through mitigation and restoration projects.
