Serena McClain
Director, River Restoration, Federal Grants

Department: Conservation

Area of Focus: Serena works with local stakeholders to demonstrate how to enhance public safety, quality of life and economic development opportunities by restoring the natural function of rivers. Being located in our Washington, D.C. office allows her the opportunity to help formulate American Rivers' national policy and messaging work on river restoration, while also serving in a field capacity for projects in Maryland and Virginia. Serena also manages our River Grants program.

Background: Serena joined American Rivers in 2001. Prior to that she served as a political media consultant on the Gore-Lieberman presidential campaign and as an account executive with Porter Novelli.

Education: B.A. in Political Science from Angelo State University 

Favorite River: San Marcos River

Concrete from the Simkins Dam is headed to its new home today thanks to NOAA and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The dam, which originally blocked more than 22 miles of habitat for migratory fish in the Patapsco River, was removed in December 2010 due to the efforts of American Rivers, the NOAA Restoration Center, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and other partners.

A River on the Mend: Patapsco restoration in progress

Significant progress has been made at the Simkins Dam removal on the Patapsco River since construction began this fall. In fact, the Simkins Dam is no longer. Instead, the steel that once bound the structure together has been taken to a recycling facility, and the concrete has been handed over to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation where it waits to eventually be used as part of a larger oyster habitat project in the Bay.

Throughout 2010 we reported back to you on exciting dam removals happening all across the United States. From the removal that helped keep a local company from laying off employees to the restoration of more than 333 miles of habitat on the mighty Rogue River in Oregon, rivers across the country once again sprang to life. Our year-end survey reveals that these are just two of the 59 dams that were dismantled in 14 states.
