Sean Foltz
Associate Director, Clean Water Program

Department: Conservation

Area of Focus: Sean works to promote green infrastructure in Milwaukee, a concept that includes specific engineering and policy tools to improve the way Wisconsin can manage their water resources. Sean works with a variety of groups to achieve this goal, including grassroots environmental organizations, business interests, as well as local and state agencies.

Background: Sean joined American Rivers in 2009. Prior to American Rivers, he Directed the Midwest Lakes Policy Center and worked in the Kingdom of Tonga for the U.S. Peace Corps.

Education: B.S. Environmental Biology/Technical Writing from St. Mary's University, and the University of Oregon. Graduate Studies and Fellowship at the University of Chicago and the Shedd Aquarium.

A seemingly unlikely candidate is stepping forward with the hopes of inspiring innovation and setting a precedent for “natural” storm water management in the city of Milwaukee, WI.  Milwaukee is looking to construct one of the first “green corridors” in the state of Wisconsin. In looking to go green, being able to physically experience or touch a finished product seems to be the main deterrent to action in light of large-scale global environmental issues.

Innovative Green Roof

American Rivers has recently completed a 4,000 square foot green roof in Milwaukee’s Kinnickinnic watershed, at the Energy Exchange. This project will reduce the amount of stormwater runoff, and result in decreased stress on Milwaukee’s aging sewer system. The roof was completed through funds provided by MMSD’s Green Roof Initiative, and a match by American Rivers.
