Area of Focus: Jim manages the Government Relations staff, guiding its work with Congress and the Administration to advance public policy that is beneficial to rivers and the communities that enjoy and depend on them.
Background: Jim joined American Rivers in 2010. Immediately prior to joining American Rivers, he served for a year and a half as Legislative Director for US Rep. John J. Hall (NY). Prior to that, he served on the staff of US Rep. Tom Allen (ME) for more than nine and a half years, the last two as Legislative Director. Jim also served as Senior Advisor to the Tom Allen for Senate Campaign.
Education: B.A. in Government and Legal Studies from Bowdoin College

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives voted to strike something called the Extinction Rider out of the Interior-EPA Appropriations bill. This was a policy rider that would have prevented the Fish and Wildlife Service from working on the listing of any endangered species.

The House continues its efforts to undermine clean water protections. The Interior-EPA Appropriations bill, coming to the House floor next week, has language in it that will undermine EPA’s efforts to protect the 117 million Americans who rely on head water streams and rivers for their drinking water.

The House of Representatives is considering legislation now to fund the government through the remainder of Federal Fiscal Year 2011. This bill, H.R. 1, contains deep cuts to programs that protect clean water, public health and public safety.

Election Day 2010 has come and gone. How did rivers fare?
First, some very good news: voters across the country spoke up loud and clear for clean water and conservation in a number of critical ballot measures. For example:
• In Iowa, voters approved by a whopping 63% an amendment to the state constitution to create a permanent trust fund aimed at protecting and restoring the state's natural resources.
