Area of Focus: Amy directs our media and communications work.
Background: Amy joined American Rivers in 1998 in our Washington, DC office. She moved to our Northwest Regional Office in Seattle in 2000.
Education: B.A. in Creative Writing and Literature from Trinity College in Hartford, CT. Amy studied coastal ecology with the School for Field Studies on Vancouver Island, British Columbia and spent a semester in Florence, Italy studying literature and art history. She completed field ecology programs in Panama through the University of Florida and in Big Sur, California through San Francisco State University.
Favorite River: Any river with my husband, our dogs, and our driftboat!

Last year the President caused a stir when he highlighted salmon management as an example of government inefficiency. “The Interior Department is in charge of salmon while they’re in fresh water, but the Commerce Department handles them when they’re in salt water,” Obama said. “I hear it gets even more complicated once they’re smoked.”

What to do with all of the debris created by a dam removal? We made a fish art out of a piece of rebar from Elwha Dam. When we picked it out of the rubble pile it was tangled, brown and rusty. Our welder friend worked his magic and transformed it into a beautiful silver salmon.

Deconstruction kicks back into action today at the Elwha River dams, after a planned work stoppage since Nov 1 (crews paused their sediment-releasing dam removal work to protect salmon runs in the river). According to Olympic National Park officials, plans at Elwha Dam this week include diverting the river back into the right channel (looking downstream) and beginning another reservoir drawdown.
